The Old Village Of Ventabren

The village of Ventabren was founded around the 10th Century on top of a hill to resist invasion and looting from the Sarazins. The village is comprised of a fortified castle, which sets the tone of the overall architecture. A small assembly of houses was built around the castle to house the "seigneurs (Lords) de Ventabren".

In the village, you will discover a maze of quaint cobbled streets and a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. From the foot of the ruins of Chateau of Queen Jeanne, you will relish an unobstructed view of the Etang de Berre, the town of Martigues and the Alpilles Hills.

What to see: Remains of the Château of Queen Jeanne, 17th-century Church, Olive Oil Wind Mill, Roquefavour Aqueduc, L’Ermitage Saint Honorat, and the Ventabren Museum

The Surroundings - Activities & Events
One of the few true oases left in western Europe, Provence boasts some of the most diverse natural landscapes in the world - from the azure coastline of the Côte Bleue and the maritime centres of Marseille, Cassis, and Méjean to the majestic peaks of Mt Saint Victoire, and Mt Ventoux; from the rolling hills of the Luberon to the breathtaking depths of the world famous Gorges du Verdon.

Aix en Provence is known to some as the city of water because of the numerous fountains dispersed throughout its circuitous walkways and picturesque boulevards. Additionally, Aix-en-Provence was the birthplace of Cézanne, and art lovers can visit his virtually untouched atelier (workshop).

What to Do: The gastronomist will enjoy an authentic French Fruit and Vegetable market teeming with activity and brimming with fragrant herbs, organic fruits and vegetables from local farms. For those less ambitious, sample the many delicacies from a multitude of artisan patisseries (bakeries), chocolatiers, and charcuteries (delis). Bargain hunters will find not only hand milled soaps, local earthenware and fine linens but also eclectic antiquities and a plethora of shops stocked with the latest in European fashion at prices lower than Paris prices. After a day of exploration, be sure to take a drink at one of the one-of–a-kind terrace cafés on Cours Mirabeau. Here, there are no Starbucks and the air is warm, the light sublime and the sidewalk alive with people watching opportunities.

Two public golf courses are nearby -- within 15 minutes of the villa. Endless trails supply ample opportunity for hiking, strolling or road and mountain biking.
